Destiny Church connected with Oasis International for “Home For The Holidays” and had 36 families invite 100 refugees to their homes for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Refugee families need love and relationships as much as furniture and clothes. Gatherings like these are so welcoming to the refugees and helps to build lasting friendships with new friends.
When Joani spoke to our English classes about the plight of the refugees fleeing from Turkey to Greece to Europe, we decided we had to do something about it. Two of our English teachers are there now helping the refugees, Mike Greiner, in Macedonia and Sara Owens, in France.
Grace Hagstrom made a difference when she collected over 800 socks and undergarments and donated them to Oasis International. She did it to complete her Girl Scout Cadet Silver award.
We love the month of March because University students come from California to New York to volunteer at Oasis. They are part of the City Lights program to bring students on spring break to do volunteer work in the St. Louis area.
We have a new domain name. We believe this really says what Oasis International is all about. In a time when many people are concerned about refugees coming to the U.S., Oasis International wants everyone to know that we are FOR the refugee families.
What a wonderful year we had with our English students! One of our students from Iraq said, “Before I came to English class at Oasis, I was afraid to have a conversation with an American. Now I feel that I can speak and understand and I am not afraid.”
What does the Bible say about how to treat refugees? With terrorist attacks and politically polarizing speeches and even division in the church, there seems to be a lot of confusion about how we should think or feel about the 65 million displaced people (half of them are children) fleeing their countries.
It’s been a busy summer. New refugees are arriving everyday. More furniture is needed for the many Congolese, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghani, Somali, Sudanese, Burmese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Bhutanese families.
We would love for you to join us and our new refugee friends to celebrate what God has done in the last ten years through Oasis International. Free BBQ, music, games and giveaways.
We would love for you to join us and our new refugee friends to celebrate what God has done in the last ten years through Oasis International. Free BBQ, music, games and giveaways. There will be a short presentation from 12:30 - 1:00. You will have an opportunity to give financially to our benevolence fund to bless our refugee families as they begin their new life in St. Louis.
Delicious foods and ethnic delicacies from around the world prepared by the teachers and students were the hit at our Thanksgiving celebration. The Equinox Chamber players entertained us once again with beautiful music. How fun for the English teachers to share the heart warming story of the first Thanksgiving with their students.
